Industrial buildings will have higher ceilings, therefore larger air flow from the outside. Hence, you need to consider a more powerful unit for the space than for a home. Great care must be given to what is being stored in the space: farm produce for instance will contain a lot of water compared to sealed merchandise. High roofs take off 30%, for large moisture content conditions take 50%.
Use the simple guide to judge the size of dehumidifier needed for the home environment needed to be kept dry.
Go to the approximate size of the home and down to the severity of the problem to get an idea of the right product for the home.
Ideal Level of Dryness
For most homes, a relative humidity level of 50-70% ensures comfort. However, the ideal level can vary based on individual preferences.
Dehumidifiers come with a margin of error in their readings, typically ranging from 5-15%. Keep in mind that these scales are relative.
Several factors influence humidity levels, including the room size, the items being dried, and the air refresh rate, which depends on how much outside humidity enters the room. Time also plays a role in achieving the desired dryness.
Low Grain Refrigerant vs. Desiccant Dehumidifiers
For low temperatures or focused drying, desiccant dehumidifiers typically perform better. However, at higher temperatures, desiccants can still offer advantages.
Refrigerant dehumidifiers, on the other hand, tend to struggle when operating above 35°C (95°F), as the compressor, which is the heart of the system, faces excessive strain. The compressor drives the gas around the refrigeration circuit, and prolonged operation at high temperatures can shorten its lifespan.
How does a LGR dehumidifier work?
Considerations for Restoration Professionals
LGR (Low Grain Refrigerant) dehumidifiers are simple to operate—just place one in the room, switch it on, and let it pump the water away automatically.
Desiccant dehumidifiers, however, typically deliver faster drying times and allow for better control and direction of dry air. They also offer the advantage of being highly durable and requiring minimal maintenance, making them a reliable choice for demanding restoration environments.
Moreover, pool areas obviously are more humid than hanging areas. If there is a large surface area of glass to keep clear in the pool area, consideration may be needed to create a curtain of dry air down the glass .
Glass will act as a dehumidifier condensing moisture in the room and special consideration may be needed.
