Installing the EPD50 / DH1200 in an Attic

One of the most popular installation locations for the EPD50 / DH1200 dehumidifier is the attic or within an attic void, crawl space, or basement. Below are best practices to ensure optimal performance and long-term reliability.

1. Exhausting Wet Air

• Route the exhaust duct through overhang eaves via soffit boards or the gable end of your home.

• Use a vent cover to prevent animals from entering and to reduce wind blowback.

• Keep the exhaust on a slight downward slope, or insulate the duct if necessary to prevent condensation.

2. Distributing Dry Air

• Use ducting to push dry air to multiple points, such as bedrooms and bathrooms—commonly the most humid areas.

• Install Y-connectors to increase the number of outlets.

• Position outlet grills away from direct contact with occupants (e.g., in room corners) to avoid drafts.

3. Drawing Damp Air

• Pull damp air from a central location, usually the landing at the top of the stairs, as moisture naturally rises through convection.

• For large homes or single-floor properties, additional fans or a second dehumidifier may be required.

• Consider separate solutions for basements, crawl spaces, conservatories, and garages.

4. Promote Airflow

• Leave doors slightly open to allow air to circulate throughout the home.

5. Humidity Control

• The unit includes a built-in humidistat, but when ducting is installed, we recommend an external humidistat like the EPHUM24DF.

• Position the humidistat near your home heating controls or at the top of the stairs for accurate readings and faster response times.

6. Filter Maintenance

• Clean the dehumidifier’s filter periodically.

• To reduce trips to the attic, consider a remote filter grill with a built-in dust filter.

• If using a remote filter, you can remove the internal filter as long as it’s comparable in material (reticulated foam).

7. Ducting Tips

• For long duct runs, use wider ducts than the minimum requirement to maintain proper airflow.

8. Power Supply

• Connect the unit to the mains supply only (max draw: 500–550W).

• Do not use a lighting circuit. Always consult a qualified electrician.

9. Setting Relative Humidity (RH)

• For the first 2–3 weeks, set the RH to low (around 10%) for continuous drying.

• Once conditions are under control, raise to 60–65% for maintenance mode.

• We do not recommend timed cycles, as continuous monitoring ensures the best results.

10. Regular Maintenance

• Clean the inlet grill filter periodically to maintain airflow and performance.
